Event Details:
On Thursday, March 2nd, The Kentucky Historical Society hosted an event featuring Kentucky high school basketball. It was a festive evening for all involved to show support for 100 years of basketball in the Commonwealth and recognize its cultural impact.
Kent Whitworth, Director of the Kentucky Historical Society
The purpose of the event was to promote the working partnership between the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame (KHSBHF) in support of high school basketball and its upcoming Centennial Celebration.
The joy the sport has given so many for so many years was on display!
Speakers included:
Winston Bennett, KHSBHF Spokesperson
Jeff Hoover, House Speaker
Kenny Davis, 1972 Olympic Team Captain
Robert Stivers, Senate President
In the first ever House vs. Senate free-throw contest, to help tip-off the Centennial Celebration, Hoover defeated Stivers in an overtime shootout after they tied in the first round. Both shooters displayed excellent form.
The celebratory year officially begins with the KHSAA 2017 Boys Sweet 16 and culminates at the 2018 version. The Centennial Celebration is a joint project between the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) and the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame (KHSBHF) and the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC). The goal is to enable every school and community, in one form or another, to take part in honoring high school basketball history while promoting its future.
